Square's Greatest Hits

According to the Official Playstation Blog, which has just received a complete visual make-over, Parasite Eve will be releasing on PSN this coming Tuesday for $5.99. Which is a nice discount since the PS1 Final Fantasy's from the same generation are listed at $9.99.

There's no doubt they have me sold the moment Parasite Eve is available for download, but with all these classic Square games going up for sale week after week, is this Square's own greatest hits album? Musicians release their greatest hits albums to cash-in on past successes. It's pretty clear that Square is trying to do the exact same thing. Is this the beginning of the end for Square-Enix?

Probably not. However, this clearly hasn't been the best year for Square-Enix. They saw serious drops in sales and earnings through 2010 and I don't see anything on the immediate horizon that will sell as well as FFXIII did in Japan.

All that negativity aside, I'm currently looking forward to The 3rd Birthday, Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy, and Final Fantasy IV: Complete. All three are PSP games and set to release in the next couple months. Will they be big sellers? I don't know. Hopefully it's enough to keep Square-Enix pumping out top quality PSP games. I've been very impressed with everything they've released on PSP and so far and have yet to see anything from Square-Enix on the PS3 worth the full $59.99 price.
